Stop wasting time on dead annual reviews. When a formal review arrives, most managers rely on memory, employees miss the chance for useful feedback, and development actions feel disconnected from the real work.
The CIPD notes that performance management is moving away from annual appraisals towards regular performance conversations. And Gallup found that 80% of employees who received meaningful feedback in the past week are fully engaged.
What is scorable employee observation software?
It's a simple way for managers to record what they observe, score progress consistently and connect development needs straight back to learning. Skills Velocity's observation forms were inspired by the first-principles thinking associated with SpaceX and Tesla. You can build them for any situation, including:
- disciplinary processes, approved once by legal and HR for consistency
- personal development
- learning checkpoints
Each form can match your organisation's own tone and style.
How does it work?
A form takes about 10 to 15 minutes to build for a specific topic or skill, and sits inside a course so learning and management connect.
- The learner completes the content.
- They mark themselves as ready to be observed.
- Their manager is notified.
- The observation happens informally, over a quick coffee, for example, which builds relationships and trust.
The six checklists
1. Onboarding and personal growth (days 1–30)
Shows how well a new employee is settling in: whether expectations are clear, whether they feel supported, and which development needs are emerging. It gives managers insight beyond induction completion, and gives employees a "they have my back" moment.
2. Compliance and foundational training (days 30–60)
Checks understanding, not just completion, of essential training, policies and standards, creating a clear, low-drama audit trail with psychological safety built in. Pairs well with automated compliance evidence.
3. Role-specific skills mastery (days 60–90, then quarterly)
Observes job-specific skills such as technical knowledge, process accuracy, communication, confidence and task quality, and shows where gaps may affect NPS, efficiency and profit.
4. Mental wellbeing and resilience (every 90 days)
Gives managers a structured way to see how someone is coping, spot pressure points and start supportive conversations early. Wellbeing becomes part of responsible performance management, not just a response to problems.
5. Critical thinking, innovation and first principles (quarterly)
Looks at how someone thinks through the work, not only whether it was completed: how they approach problems, challenge assumptions and find better ways of working.
6. Leadership, growth and future readiness (six-monthly and annual)
Identifies emerging leadership behaviours and readiness for more responsibility, feeding an automated growth framework and capability map of who is developing, and where.
From observation to development
Each observation feeds the person's skills spidergram, so gaps trigger the right learning automatically. See also custom reviews and appraisals.
